Justin Frye felt like he was in a car commercial.

Frye, a physician assistant for Duke Infectious Diseases, and a group of friends were the only people for miles as they drove around Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats on vacation. The flats, which cover about 45 square miles, is covered in a thick crust of salt.

Using a drone, he took a picture of him and four friends standing in a pool that formed on the flats after a brief rain.

“Work-life balance is very important to me,” Frye said. “I’m thankful for Duke’s generous paid time off.

As the Duke Time off photo campaign enters its sixth week, Frye is the second winner, earning a Duke beach chair courtesy of Duke University Stores. Through mid-August, Working@Duke invites University and Health System staff and faculty to share photos as part the campaign to highlight big and small summer adventures and hobbies and passions outside the office.

Employees have shared 220 photos so far. You can see many of them by following Working@Duke on Twitter and Facebook. Don't forget to share your pictures over the July Fourth holiday. Meanwhile, here are other notable submissions we're sharing for the first time.

Akmarzhan Kasmaganbetova

Akmarzhan Kasmaganbetova, program assistant intern at the Duke Center for International Development, enjoyed a trip to Savannah, Ga. with her 3-year-old daughter, Malika, over Memorial Day weekend. She snapped the above photo of Malika at Forsyth Park.

“It was one of those cheerful summer days, indeed!” Kasmaganbetova said.

Bebe Mills

Bebe Mills, director of student services for Duke University School of Nursing, made sure her shirt matched her mindset on an evening walk at Wrightsville Beach earlier this month.

“I’m not selfish. It’s called self-care,” the shirt said.

Heather Ebron

Heather Ebron, clinical nurse for the Duke Cancer Center Telephone Triage Services, took a picture of a town in Cinque Terre, Italy. Cinque Terre, meaning “five lands,” is made up of five villages jutting out along the rugged coastline.

“I cannot tell you how important it is for each of us to recharge, explore and relax with friends,” Ebron said.

Mark Mathison

Mark Mathison buried his son, Everett, in sand before taking this photo on a family vacation at Fripp Island, S.C. The family has vacationed there for the past 20 years.

“It’s become a very special place for us,” said Mathison, staff assistant for the Office of Postdoctoral Services.
