March 17 Workshop to Explain How to Write and Publish Op-ed Articles

Each year, dozens of Duke faculty members publish op-ed articles in leading newspapers across the country, internationally and in online publications such as the Huffington Post, Salon and Vox.

On Friday, March 17, Duke’s Office of News and Communications (ONC) will conduct a workshop to show others how they, too, can share their views and expertise with large audiences beyond their classrooms.

The workshop, from 9-11 a.m. in the Room 03 of the Sanford School of Public Policy, will explain how Duke authors can craft articles that appeal to opinion editors, as well as how they can get essays and other pieces on Duke’s Medium site. Each person participating in the workshop will actually begin writing a commentary piece, with feedback provided by the instructor and the other attendees.

This is the sixth year that ONC has offered this workshop; Duke faculty who attended the first five sessions gave it high marks and several went on to write and publish articles.

The workshop will be led by Keith Lawrence, ONC’s executive director of news and communications, who manages Duke’s op-ed service.

ONC limits attendance at the workshop to ensure everyone gets personal attention. Faculty interested in participating should email keith.lawrence@duke.edu.
