News Tip: Resignations Part of ‘Enormous Damage’ by Trump, Expert Says

Senior Foreign Service officers are resigning as the Trump era begins.

  “Never before has there been a mass resignation of foreign policy professionals within the first week of a presidency,” says Bruce Jentleson, a professor of public policy and political science at Duke University and a former senior adviser to the U.S. State Department policy planning director.

  “These are Foreign Service officers who have worked for one president after another, Republican and Democratic, committed to their oaths to serve the country they love. That so many of them believe the best way to serve their country is not to be involved in the foreign policy of the Trump administration sends a message we ignore at our own peril.”

  Bruce Jentleson studies post-Cold War American foreign policy, international security and particularly issues of force and diplomacy. From 2009-11 he was senior advisor to the U.S. State Department Policy Planning director. In 2012 he served on the Obama 2012 campaign National Security Advisory Steering Committee.

  For the academic year 2015-2016, he held the Henry A. Kissinger Chair in Foreign Policy and International Relations at the John W. Kluge Center, Library of Congress.
