“I started here in September 2012 as a recent nursing grad in the ER. I work night shifts, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. I like the fast pace and not really knowing what the patient is coming in with. They are like a puzzle and you have to figure out what’s wrong with them. We get gunshot victims that walk in, and we see anything from normal colds to strokes. There could be three patients in the department one minute and the next minute you could have 20, so it’s the unknown. You have to be prepared. The ER is organized chaos.

I am also the chair for the rewards and recognition committee and we plan events for ER Nurses Week and EMS Week. ER Nurses Week is in October. We had food and snacks every day for each shift, whether it be desserts or pizza or cupcakes. I also make gift bags for everyone with their name on it that has candy and a gift in it. We do a staff shout-out board at the nurses’ station, where you can write a little card thanking a coworker. I think it’s important to recognize employees because we do work really hard, and the ER is the kind of environment where you don’t get a lot of thank-yous. That’s not why we go into nursing, but it’s still nice to be recognized for your hard work.”
