What You Need to Know for Election Day

A quick guide to information about voting and political behavior today:

  • Duke University Policy: Duke University policy allows staff who are registered voters and unable to vote outside of regular work hours scheduled time off with or without pay. To learn more about Duke's policy, click here.
  • Duke University encourages all students, faculty and staff to participate fully in the political life of the community. However, in so doing, it is also important to keep in mind the legal guidelines that govern political activity on campus. As a non-profit, tax-exempt entity, Duke must abide by federal and state laws prohibiting the use of its facilities, services or personnel to promote or support individuals or organizations campaigning for public office. No Duke resources – including personnel, e-mail accounts, copiers, office space, vehicles or publications – may be used for political purposes. Guidelines on addressing the most common questions about on-campus political activity can be found here on the university’s Government Relations website.
  • Polls across North Carolina are open Tuesday from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.  Those in line at 7:30 p.m. will be able to cast their ballot. Lines in some locations tend to be longer before and after normal business hours.
  • Same-day registration is not available on Election Day. As of Nov. 5, nearly 6.9 million people were registered to vote in North Carolina.
  • To find out if you are registered and eligible to vote or to find your Election Day polling site, go to the Public Voter site on the Durham County Board of Elections website. Most students on West and Central Campus will vote at George Watts Elementary School; Most East Campus residents will vote at the Crest Street recreation center, but voters should use the Public Voter site to confirm location.
  • Voters who need assistance at the polls must request that assistance. Individuals who are unable to enter the polling place may vote curbside. Once inside the polling place, voters who experience difficulties may alert a poll worker to request help.
  • Election results will begin posting after the close of polls at http://er.ncsbe.gov/.
  • Want to watch the results come in on campus? The Sanford School of Public Policy will hold a viewing party beginning at 9 p.m.
