Double, double toil and trouble… It’s time for Duke staff and faculty to concoct the perfect photo for the sixth annual Blue Devil Halloween Photo Contest.

This year’s contest invites employees to submit their work- or Duke-related Halloween photos by 12 p.m. Nov. 1.

Last year, colleagues with Duke Pratt School of Engineering’s Professional Masters Programs took home the top prize, coffee mugs adorned with the winning photo, after dressing up as “Guess Who?” board game characters. The photo received the most “likes” on Facebook, nearly 550, after two days of voting.

“It always helps to have a wonderful costume, especially in getting people who don’t know you to vote,” said Lorelle Babwah, assistant director of Student Services in Pratt’s Professional Masters Programs. “You have to cater to your fans. You gotta get out there on the campaign trail.”

Here’s how to participate:

  1. Take your best shot and submit your work- or Duke-related Halloween photo by 12 p.m. Nov. 1.
  2. All eligible submissions will be posted in an album on Working@Duke's Facebook page by 5 p.m. Nov. 1.
  3. Visit the album and vote for your favorite Halloween photo until 4 p.m. Nov. 3. (You must have a Facebook account to vote).
  4. The photo with the most "likes" will receive the grand prize - the winning photo on a coffee mug or mouse pad. Judges will award bags of candy for the spookiest and most creative photos.
  5. Winners will be announced on Facebook and Duke Today on Nov. 4.

The Blue Devil Halloween Photo contest is open to University and Health System staff and faculty. Photos must be work-or Duke-related with a Halloween theme, and photos must be taken this month to be eligible.

Tracy Bethel's costume in 2015.

Last year’s spookiest photo award went to Tracy Bethel, program manager with Duke Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, for highlighting her 37-week pregnancy by sticking two baby doll hands out of her shirt.

Now, her daughter, Flannery, is 11 months old and dressing up as a monkey at home this Halloween. Bethel is planning to be primatologist Jane Goodall.

“It’s really fun,” Bethel said about the annual Halloween photo contest. “Being able to participate in something like this is a way to socialize with your team and helps teams work together better.”
