Cast Your Vote Early on Campus [Updated with To Date Totals]

Duke to host early voting location on Central Campus Oct. 27 to Nov. 5

In the lead up to November’s election day, Duke will host an early voting location on campus.

Employees, students and anyone eligible to vote in Durham County will be able to cast their ballots at the Devil’s Den at 309 Oregon Drive daily Oct. 27 to Nov. 5.  Hours of voting will vary by day at Devil’s Den. A full list of times is available on the Durham County Board of Elections website. Most days run 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Duke students are eligible to vote at the site if they are a U.S. citizen and a legal resident of Durham County for 30 days by the date of the election on Nov. 8. Voters must be at least 18 years old, although individuals who are 17 can register and vote if they will be 18 by the November general election day.

Bus transportation to and from the early voting site will be provided by Parking and Transportation Services, which includes stops at East and West campuses as well as the Medical Center. The C2 bus will make an additional stop at the nearby Devil’s Den. For a full list of transportation options, see this rundown.

During early voting times in the 2008 and 2012 general elections, more than 9,000 people cast their ballot at Duke.

“Voting is our fundamental civic obligation,” said Michael Schoenfeld, vice president for public affairs and government relations.  “We are grateful to the Durham County Board of Elections for working with us to provide this opportunity for the Duke community and our neighbors.”

Per Duke’s voting policy, staff who are registered voters and unable to vote outside of regular work hours should be granted scheduled time off with or without pay. Time away from work should be scheduled with a supervisor.

In an effort to encourage early voting on campus, Duke community members can receive free admission to the Nasher Museum of Art for themselves and one other person by showing to front desk staff an “I voted” sticker from the Devil’s Den early voting location. Students and employees using the Central Campus site will also be entered in a  raffle to win a $45 "Southern Accent" exhibition catalogue.
