During a “Fight the Flu” blitz on Thursday, healthcare staff set up stations in Duke’s hospitals to ensure thousands of employees received their free flu shot.

The campaign kicked off in Duke South Clinic as well as Duke Regional, Duke Raleigh and Duke University hospitals. At Duke University Hospital, Employee Occupational Health & Wellness staff set up tables for 13 hours outside the Atrium Cafe with swabs, Band-Aids and the vaccine.

EOHW is offering flu vaccine clinics this fall to prepare for flu season. Last year, about 30,000 Duke employees received their flu shot, which is a condition of employment in the Health System and for many School of Medicine employees.

In the above photo, Dr. Josh Dooley, a physician with Duke Anesthesiology, said he can see about six to 30 patients in one day, so he finds importance in getting his flu shot to stay healthy. “In addition to my own health, I worry about my patient’s health,” Dooley said.

Stephanie King, a research associate in Duke Gastroenterology, said not only does she get her flu shot to protect patients, but she receives the vaccine to protect her family.

“I also have a little kid at home,” King said. “It’s good to have so you’re not passing around germs.”

Staff and faculty can check Duke’s flu vaccination schedule to find out when they can receive their free flu shot. No appointment is necessary.

Certain Duke Primary Care locations are also offering extended and weekend hours to vaccinate dependents of Duke employees.
