Motorists traveling to and around Duke's East and West campuses should allow for extra travel time beginning Tuesday, Aug. 23, and Aug. 26 to Aug. 28, due to student move-in for the start of the academic year.

No parking on East Campus

On Aug. 23, first-year students will move into residence halls on East Campus. With heavier traffic and an increase in parking needs, all parking areas on East Campus will be cleared of vehicles from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition, all East Campus entrances will be closed except to students with authorized passes from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

As a parking alternative, Duke permit holders can park in legal areas marked by the city with signs on side streets on the perimeter of East Campus, which include Broad Street, West Markham Avenue and North Buchanan Boulevard. Employees with permits for East Campus lots may park in the north and south gated lots at Smith Warehouse off Buchanan Boulevard, where attendants and signage will assist with parking.

Bus service disruptions will occur for most campus routes during the Aug. 23 move-in to accommodate East Campus traffic. Although there will be minimum service between East and West campuses, there will be no service on Campus Drive or Swift Avenue.

Traffic, parking adjustments on West Campus

Due to expected traffic and congestion, the iron gates at the intersection of Duke University Road and Wannamaker Drive will be open to allow traffic into the area on Aug. 26 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Aug. 27 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Aug. 28 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.

On West Campus, move-in will take place Aug. 26 to Aug. 28 and could slow traffic around Duke University Road and the traffic circle on Towerview Road. Parking and entry in some lots will also be restricted:

  • Entry to the Blue Zone can be accessed via Towerview and Duke University roads.
  • The parking lots off Edens Drive by Few Quad will be designated as an unloading zone Aug. 27 and 28 and not used for parking.
  • Half of Bay 3 in the Card Gym Lot will be used for unloading, restricting some parking on Aug. 26.

Staff will be positioned at the entrance of lots around West Campus residence halls to direct permit holders to parking spaces and students to unloading areas.
