Eleven incoming first-year students from North and South Carolina have been awarded the prestigious Benjamin N. Duke Memorial Scholarship at Duke University. The award covers full tuition, room, board and mandatory fees for eight semesters at Duke.The award is given to students from the two states who have demonstrated high academic achievement, a commitment to community service and potential for leadership. The full value of each scholarship is estimated to be more than $260,000 over four years.The scholarship also includes service and leadership development activities and two summer programs, one in the Carolinas and one abroad, during the recipients' undergraduate careers at Duke.The scholarships were established by The Duke Endowment to honor Benjamin Newton Duke, one of the university's founders.The Class of 2020 recipients are:-- Daisy Almonte of Turkey, North Carolina, a graduate of Union High School and daughter of Maria Lopez and Victor Almonte.-- Breanna Bradham of Summerton, North Carolina, a graduate of Laurence Manning Academy and daughter of Agnes H.
