Summer Road Construction Begins May 16

Frank Bassett and Science drives to be affected through summer

Beginning next week, portions of Frank Bassett Drive and Science Drive will be closed to traffic for summer-long construction projects. Work is expected to take place from May 16 through mid-August, when students return.

Frank Bassett Drive Utility Upgrades

As part of upgrades to Wallace Wade Stadium, Facilities Management will oversee a variety of utility upgrades that continue last year’s work to add new gas and electrical lines.

See this map for details.

Impact

All parking along Bassett Drive will be closed to the Duke community as construction takes place. Phase 1 runs May 16 to July 1 on the eastern half of the road before shifting to the eastern portion from July 4 to Aug. 12. During this time, pedestrian crossings and paths will be established to allow for foot traffic to get to the Green Zone Parking Lot and summer camp operations. Road closures will be placed at both ends of Bassett Drive where it meets Science Drive and near Wallace Wade Stadium.

Some bus routes with stops near Bassett Drive will also be affected

Science Drive Closure

A small portion of Science Drive by its intersection with Bassett Drive will close as part of construction for Duke’s new Science Drive/Cameron Boulevard garage, which is across from the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club.

Impact

The closure will affect about 400 feet on Science Drive where no through traffic will be allowed. There will be no bus services to stops at the Science-Bassett intersection, which will not be part of the summer’s PR1 route. There will be a temporarily bus stop at the Science Drive Visitor Lot.

Concurrent with that work, construction will also take place on Cameron Boulevard. One lane for southbound and northbound traffic will alternate closure.

Through July 1, the south lanes will be widened by 10 feet in order to add a new left hand turn lane to allow for drivers to turn into the garage. Once completed, work will restart after the July 4 holiday and run until the end of August to add about 12 feet to the north lanes, creating a right hand turn lane for traffic to enter the garage.

During construction, crews will block off one lane from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Traffic will have access to two lanes outside of that timeframe.

Campus Drive Closure

As Duke continues construction of its new Arts Building by the corner of Anderson Street and Campus Drive, utility lines are being installed for the 71,000-square-foot facility.

Impact

For the next three to four weeks, the block of Campus Drive between Alexander Avenue and Anderson Street will be reduced to one lane as construction crews prepare for a summer-long project to connect utility lines to the Art Building. From now until early June, one lane will be available 24 hours a day; sidewalks will remain open for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Once initial work is done – around the first or second week of June – the 750-feet long portion of Campus Drive will close for all through traffic until mid-August. Pedestrians and bicyclists will still be able to use the sidewalk on the southern side of the street.

Duke community members visiting the Parking and Transportation Services office can find nearby street parking along Alexander Avenue, Duke University Road and paid parking at the Nasher Museum of Art. Parking and Transportation staff are evaluating how the closure will impact bus routes to determine best options for detours.
