The Program Coordinator is responsible for unified communications and outreach for all programs of Sustainable Duke. The Program Coordinator will lead student engagement, manage and develop Sustainable Duke’s education and engagement programs, track metrics to demonstrate the impact of all programs of Sustainable Duke and provide support for the Sustainability Engagement Certificate. Assistance with administrative tasks will be required to advance the goals and programs of Sustainable Duke. Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Write, design and implement multimedia communications that unite all of Sustainable Duke's programs, including the Duke Carbon Offsets Initiative (DCOI) and the Duke Campus Farm (DCF); maintain detailed knowledge of all programs and initiatives for unified communications through channels including twice monthly sustainability newsletter, articles on Duke Today, daily posts on social media and announcements to Sustainable Duke's listservs
  • Use knowledge of programs to serve as the first point of communication through the sustainability e-mail account and other channels, as well as to regularly maintain Sustainable Duke's website and web-based tools including the Duke Carbon Calculator and Green Book
  • Support Assistant Director with developing new web and print tools, publications, and resources for sustainability outreach, as well as special communications projects as necessary
  • Lead Sustainable Duke's student programs including recruitment, hiring and management of Students for Sustainable Living and Dorm Eco-Reps; organize monthly meetings of student sustainability leaders; provide guidance and support to all student sustainability groups as needed
  • Provide program management for Sustainable Duke's education and engagement programs, including sustainability certifications, the Campus Sustainability Awards and the Green Grant Fund; support Assistant Director in developing new programs such as sustainability competitions 
  • Represent Sustainable Duke, DCOI and DCF in person at various outreach opportunities throughout the year including new student and staff orientations; give presentations on various sustainability topics as needed to a variety of audiences
  • Maintain regular tracking of metrics to demonstrate the impact of Sustainable Duke, DCOI and DCF 
  • Provide support for the Sustainability Engagement Certificate, including compiling a list of sustainability courses prior to each semester, maintaining a database of sustainability experiences connected to the Certificate and working with various stakeholders to identify new sustainability projects on an ongoing basis
  • Participate in strategic planning to better unite all programs of Sustainable Duke
  • Complete administrative tasks as needed including event planning, scheduling, purchasing, room reservations, data entry and student hiring using several Duke systems


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • General knowledge of sustainability issues and actions to reduce environmental impact
  • Professional communication skills, including writing for a variety of media, public speaking to groups of all sizes and maintaining engaging social media presence
  • Ability to build coalitions among a diverse student, faculty, staff and community population
  • Ability to serve as an educator and mentor
  • Strategic thinker with strong interpersonal skills, including ability to work as a team member and leader, as well as ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multifaceted programs, prioritize ongoing and deadline-based tasks, and to work with shifting priorities and schedules
  • Week night and weekend availability required
  • Experience with university sustainability programs is preferred but not required
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite, website maintenance, videography and graphic design preferred but not required
