Duke Honored for Supply Chain Management

Health System named to top-25 for improving patient outcomes, lowering costs

Duke University Health System has been included in an annual recognition of Healthcare Supply Chain Top 25 by Gartner, an information technology research and advisory firm.

The yearly listing includes companies across healthcare that demonstrate leadership in improving patient outcomes and lowering costs. Duke, appearing on the list for the first time, was ranked 22nd overall as voted by peers in the industry.

In its announcement of this year’s top 25, Gartner highlighted Duke’s strong use of analytics to connect product decisions in value analysis with patient care and drive compliance. Duke is also recognized as an early advocate and influencer in the benefits of better data standards and unique device identification for manufacturers and health systems.

“More an academic medical center with regional affiliates than some of the more sprawling providers in the study, Duke has made supply chain discipline a cornerstone of what it does, which can be a challenge at an academic medical center focused on innovation at any cost, in some cases,” the announcement said. “In addition, supply chain is integrated into the flow of patient care uniquely at Duke, with supply chain sitting on the care redesign team to help balance supply chain costs with patient care metrics.”

In addition to the Gartner recognition, Duke’s associate vice president for procurement and supply chain management has received an honor for a “hall of fame-level career” by the Bellwether League, organization that identifies and honors individuals who have demonstrated significant leadership in and influence on the healthcare supply chain.

Jane Pleasants, who has worked at Duke for 16 years, was inducted into Bellwether’s 2015 Hall of Fame class for her leadership and creativity over an almost 30 year career. Before coming to Duke, Pleasants also worked at Gordon Hospital in Calhoun, Georgia, Vanderbilt University and University of Rochester and Strong Health System.
