Amid the holiday hustle and bustle, take time to enjoy a free event at Duke this month. From a holiday concert that benefits Durham community members in need to a film screening and talk by a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter, there are plenty of options for learning and entertainment. Tuesday, Dec 1 – Duke Chorale Christmas Concert

The Duke Chorale, directed by Rodney Wynkoop, presents its annual Christmas concert featuring seasonal selections by the Duke Chorale, as well as traditional carols for the audience to sing. The 7 p.m. concert takes place in Baldwin Auditorium this year due to renovations in Duke Chapel. Please bring one non-perishable food item for families in need in Durham.

Wednesday, Dec. 2 – Screen/Society, New Turkish Cinema, "Beyond the Hill"

In the quiet foothills of Turkey, Faik lives an isolated existence. When his second son brings his boys for a visit, Faik takes the opportunity to pontificate about the law of the land, as he sees it.The film screening, organized and coordinated by the Arts of the Moving Image Program, is at 7 p.m. in White Lecture Hall. A Q&A will follow.

Thursday, Dec 3 –Bestselling Author and Journalist Judith Miller

The Rudnick Lecture and the Duke Center for Jewish Studies host journalist Judith Miller, an adjunct fellow at the Manhattan Institute, a City Journal contributing editor, and Pulitzer Prize winning investigative reporter formerly with the New York Times. In 2002, Miller was part of a small team that won a Pulitzer Prize for explanatory journalism for her January 2001 series on Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda. Miller’s talk is at 6 p.m. in Westbrook 0016.

Friday, Dec. 4 to Dec. 18 – ‘The Observer’s Frame’ Photo Exhibit

This two-week exhibition of student photographs explores the documentary tradition as led by faculty in three courses at Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies: Documentary Photography and the Southern Landscape, Color Photography, and Digital Documentary Photo - Capturing Transience. The opening reception is from 5-8 p.m. Dec. 4 at The Power Plant Gallery at the American Tobacco Campus. For gallery hours, please see this.

Saturday, Dec 19 – Make and Take Crafts from Around the World

Enjoy holiday crafting and learning about different cultural celebrations from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. during this drop-in event at Sarah P. Duke Gardens. Activities include peanut butter bird feeder, Diwali (Hindu festival of lights), Chinese New Year lanterns, a menorah of your own, and more. While the event is free, parking fees apply.
