Duke Lowers Flags in Tribute to Oregon Shooting Victims

Act follows request by NC Gov. Pat McCrory

On the instruction of NC Gov. Pat McCrory, Duke has lowered all Duke, state and US flags on campus to half-staff until sunset on Tuesday, Oct. 6. This flag lowering is in memorial of the victims of the violence that occurred on Oct. 1 at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore.

“An unspeakable act of evil prematurely ended the lives of nine of our fellow countrymen and women in Oregon,” McCrory said. “My heart breaks for the victims’ families and friends and for this senseless loss of life. I urge all North Carolinians to join Ann and me in keeping the victims, the survivors and their families in our thoughts and prayers and may this tragedy remind us of the precious nature of every human life.”
