Duke Sustainability Engagement Internship

Applications from upper-class undergraduates and masters/graduate students are currently being accepted for a new, paid Duke Sustainability Engagement internship for the 2015-2016 academic year. Work-study students are encouraged to apply. Compensation will be $12/hour at a minimum of 10 hours per week.This intern will work closely with the Director of Sustainable Duke and the Faculty Director of Sustainability to assist with the development of a new experiential Sustainability Engagement Certificate. The student selected for this internship will specifically research and create recommendations for the development of a user-friendly, searchable sustainability project database available to all Duke students and as a primary resource for students pursuing the new Sustainability Engagement Certificate.

Key elements of the database will include:

  • Listing future opportunities for new sustainability projects/research;
  • Tracking existing sustainability projects/research; and
  • Documentation of previous sustainability projects/research.

Key duties of the internship would include:

  • Identify best practices for comparable searchable databases at peer schools;
  • Research existing Duke experiential certificates (Entrepreneurship, Ethics and Civic Engagement) to learn from their development;
  • Outline requirements/recommendations for a user-friendly sustainability engagement database; and
  • Compile information on existing sustainability experiential opportunities at Duke and in the community to start populating the database.

Successful candidates should be detail oriented, self-motivated, able to work independently and show experience/interest in campus/corporate/municipal sustainability programs.

Background: The Sustainability Engagement Certificate will provide students with the experience, skills and knowledge necessary to address complex sustainability issues. Creating an experiential sustainability certificate is distinctive at Duke and appears to be unique among our peer schools nationwide. In addition to four courses, the Certificate requires two co-curricular experiences in sustainability at a minimum of 450 hours, a foundational requirement of the Certificate.  The Certificate’s success hinges on developing a user-friendly system for cataloguing available campus and community sustainability experiences, facilitating student matches with these experiences, and capturing their work outcomes to inform future engagements. There is currently no comprehensive catalogue of co-curricular sustainability opportunities for students, and this internship will have a key role in remedying this gap.  To apply, please send a resume and cover letter to tavey.mcdaniel@duke.edu, by 5 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2015. If you have questions, please email tavey.mcdaniel@duke.edu.
