Duke student a finalist for a Dutch NGO's plan to colonize Mars

Duke University senior Laurel Kaye is one of 100 finalists in a competition to be the first humans to colonize Mars. Winners of the Mars One contest will live, work and conduct research on Mars for the rest of their lives. In this video, Kaye, a 20-year-old from New York, explains why this mission would be her dream come true.

Kaye has a while to wait. The Dutch non-profit is not planning unmanned mission to Mars until 2018 with manned missions beginning in 2022. The final 24 selections will undergo eight years of intense training.

But the chance to be a true human pioneer and to step foot on another planet is bringing Kaye a lot of attention. Below are some of the most recent news stories:
