Places Remain for Oct. 24 Op-Ed Workshop

Each year, dozens of Duke faculty members publish op-ed articles in leading newspapers across the country, internationally and in online publications such as the Huffington Post. On Friday, Oct. 24, Duke’s Office of News and Communications (ONC) will conduct a workshop to show others how they, too, can share their views and expertise with large audiences beyond their classrooms.

The workshop, from 9-11 a.m. in the Room 217 of Perkins Library, will explain how Duke authors can craft articles that appeal to newspaper opinion editors.

ONC includes a shorter version of this program as part of its annual media training workshop for faculty every January. This is the fourth year that ONC has offered this op-ed workshop; Duke faculty who attended the first three sessions gave it high marks and several went on to write and publish op-ed articles.

The workshop will be led by David Jarmul, Duke’s associate vice president for news and communications, who created and ran a syndicated op-ed service at the National Academy of Sciences, and Keith Lawrence, executive director of news and communications, who manages Duke’s op-ed service and edits Duke Today’s opinion page.

ONC limits attendance at the workshop to ensure everyone gets personal attention. Faculty interested in participating should contact keith.lawrence@duke.edu.
