Support Resources Offered in Wake of Student Deaths

In the wake of the untimely deaths of two Duke students over the weekend, Duke officials have reminded the community of the support resources available for those who may need help.

“We join with the thousands of others in our community in adding our sincere  condolences to the family and friends of these two students,” said Kyle Cavanaugh, vice president of Administration.  “During this time of grieving, we want to extend support and comfort to those in need of help. Such loss, even if someone did not know the students personally, can often be emotionally challenging and raise issues of concern.”

Cavanaugh suggested that anyone going through a difficult time could reach out to several free and confidential resources to help.

  • Faculty and Staff: Personal Assistance Service (PAS) is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Or visit the PAS website.
  • Students: All students can contact Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at 919-660-1000 and in an emergency, please call Duke Police at 919-684-2444 or by dialing 911. You can also contact Duke Reach at 919- 681-2455 or at dukereach@duke.edu.

“During this time of loss, I encourage members of our community to be attentive to the emotional needs of those around them, and if appropriate, offer assistance through one of our trained professional counselors,” Cavanaugh said.
