Duke in Pictures: Thoughts of Michael Brown at Duke Chapel Vigil

Ferguson vigil

On Monday, shortly after thousands in Ferguson, MO., remembered 18-year-old Michael Brown at his funeral, members of the Duke community gathered at a candlelight vigil in front of Duke Chapel.  Organized by the Black Student Alliance, the vigil included an open mic, spoken word and poetry.

An unarmed Brown was fatally shot by a Ferguson police officer earlier this month, sparking weeks of protests around the country.

The vigil was one in a series of events linked to the Duke community's efforts to show solidarity with Brown and Ferguson protesters. This past Saturday, the Pan-Hellenic Council organized a "Hands Up, Don't Shoot" rally in front of Duke Chapel. Duke faculty members will hold a public town hall forum moderated by Professor William "Sandy" Darity at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1, in the Friedl Building on East Campus.
