Traffic Advisory: Closure on Buchanan Boulevard July 9-11 [UPDATED]

City of Durham construction to fix manholes

[UPDATED - 7/10/14] - City Revises Work Schedule for July 11

Construction work by the City of Durham on Buchanan Boulevard has been rescheduled on Friday, June 11.

From 8:30 to 10 a.m. tomorrow, crews will close off a stretch of South Buchanan Boulevard between Maxwell Avenue and the Highway 147 overpass. Both lanes of the road will be closed during that time. The construction is part of an effort to repair manholes on the street.

For more information, see this map.

After construction is complete at 10 a.m., crews will open one lane as they pave Buchanan Boulevard. Staff will be in place to direct traffic during this process.

Duke community members trying to access Smith Warehouse should use this alternative route to access the building and its parking lots.

Original story follows:

Motorists who regularly travel along Buchanan Boulevard near Smith Warehouse will need to use detours around the building this week as the City of Durham repairs two manholes between Wednesday, July 9 and Friday, July 11.

Buchanan Boulevard will be closed at its intersections with West Main Street and West Chapel Hill Street as construction takes place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day. Local traffic will be allowed on Buchanan as one lane will remain open and construction crewmembers will direct traffic as necessary.

See this map for details.

The work will impact Duke community members working or visiting Smith Warehouse, which is immediately adjacent to the construction sites. In order to access the building and its parking lots, students, faculty and staff will need to use this alternate route via Swift Avenue and West Pettigrew Street.

Construction on Buchanan Boulevard will also impact Duke bus routes. Parking and Transportation Services is currently working to adjust their schedule to allow for continued transit service. Updates to bus routes will be posted to Duke Today as the information becomes available.
