NC Congressional Staffers Get Inside Look at Academic Medicine

North Carolina congressional staff visited Duke Medical Center this week to participate this year's Project Medical Education (PME) -- a fast-paced, educational program that offers participants insight into the complex system of financing medical education and the role of academic medical centers in training doctors, conducting research, providing patient care and caring for the uninsured.

Over two days, these "medical students" took a deep drive into Duke's medical curriculum, spent time in the School of Medicine's new patient simulation center, followed residents on rounds and saw first-hand how a world-class academic medical center functions. The 2014 PME, hosted by the DUHS Office of Government Relations, gave congressional staff an unusual experience that is expected to help lawmakers make informed and educated health care policy decisions on Capitol Hill.
