Coworkers Off and Running with Free Training

'Duke Endurance Team' begins preparation for April races

It's not too late for faculty and staff to take their first steps toward completing a half or full marathon.

Registration is still open to join the Duke Endurance Team, which is pictured above during its first track workout at Wallace Wade Stadium on Jan. 11.

The group of employees is working together to prepare for April's Rock 'n' Roll half and full marathon in Raleigh. So far, 159 staff and faculty signed up for the team, with about 135 of those registered to run, according to organizers.

"The Duke Endurance Team is going to be invaluable through this process, with the support of other people who are also going out to achieve their running goals," said Carrie Smith, a clinical dietitian at the Duke Cancer Institute who's training for her first half marathon. "They have put out an awesome and detailed schedule for training and we're doing the harder runs together. Within the training group, there are all different experience levels, so there is a place for everyone."

To help faculty and staff get ready, LIVE FOR LIFE, Duke's employee wellness program, is offering the special training program, which meets through March 8 for biweekly track workouts.

During the first workout on Jan. 11, runners performed a speed workout, running two laps at a time around the track at Wallace Wade Stadium - equivalent to half a mile.

As part of the Duke Endurance Team, participants receive a race registration discount, free virtual and in-person coaching sessions and a Duke team T-shirt. All levels of runners are able to join the team, which will start the Rock and Roll race together on April 13. Participants run their own pace on race day.

Those who sign up for the Duke Endurance team can also receive $10 off race registration by using the promo code "CORPDUKEU." Signup is available online and the discount will run until April 2.

The next group workout is Jan. 25 on East Campus. The group will meet next to the field hockey field. Employees can sign up for the Duke team online.
