Free Cultural Event Oct. 24 Brings Together Arabic-Speaking Refugees, Students

Festivities include poetry readings, live musical performances

Injaz, a new Duke student organization that connects Arabic students with local refugees from the Middle East for cultural exchange and language practice, hosts a free public event from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24.

Injaz Night will bring together local Iraqi and Sudanese families and Duke students for festivities including poetry readings and live musical performances including jazz and Arabic music. Middle Eastern refreshments will be served.

The event will take place in Fleishman Commons at the Sanford School of Public Policy, 201 Science Drive on West Campus. Parking is available in the Bryan Center Garage.

Injaz means "achievement" in Arabic. The group meets weekly for about an hour and helps refugees assimilate by teaching them English language skills while also helping Duke students learn Arabic skills.

The Oct. 24 event is sponsored by Duke's Arabic Program, the Department of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies, Student Organization Finance Committee, Duke Student Government, the Center for Muslim Life, the Duke Islamic Studies Center and Duke Service-Learning.
