Several dozen faculty and students explored social and political issues surrounding the recent viral Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke VMA performance Wednesday evening at the Department of Women's Studies.

Women's Studies professor Gabriel Rosenberg and researcher Clare Counihan, framed the discussion with multimedia supplements. The audience watched Robin Thicke's unrated "Blurred Lines" music video, as well as the viral Mod Carousel parody video and a clip of Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke's VMA performances. Presenters discussed these videos with regards to sexuality, masculine and feminine power dynamics and racial undertones.

Following the faculty presentations, the audience held a larger conversation around the reasons and historical context for the performances, as well as the media and cultural reaction.
