Duke Insurance Pays for Flu Shots at Pharmacies

No co-pay for certain shots at participating pharmacies through Duke's health plans

Duke's health insurance for employees and retirees now includes coverage for the flu vaccine and two other common vaccinations at participating retail pharmacies with no co-payment required.

Currently, the available vaccines are for:

  • Influenza vaccination for those aged 14 and older
  • Pneumococcal vaccination (generally offered once after age 65)
  • Shingles (Zoster)  (generally offered once after age 60)

"This extended coverage lowers the barriers of cost and convenience to encourage employees to protect themselves against common vaccine-preventable diseases such as the flu," said Carol Epling, director of Employee Occupational Health and Wellness. "It is especially valuable for employees who work at times or locations that make it difficult to take advantage of free seasonal flu shots offered at Duke."

North Carolina law restricts which vaccinations retail pharmacists can offer, and not all pharmacies are set up to offer vaccines to their customers. Employees are encouraged to check with the pharmacy to determine if they offer pharmacist-provided vaccines. To be eligible for the no co-pay vaccinations, an employee must show proof of insurance from one of Duke's health plans and a participating pharmacist (not a nurse) must give the vaccination.
