As part of construction, eight steel beams placed last week

Construction crews were busy last week as work on the West Main Street bridge over Campus Drive continued.

Crews used a large crane to place eight steel beams to act as part of the support for the new overpass. Floyd Williams, project manager for Duke's Facilities Management Department, said that a concrete foundation has also been set and the next phase of work includes raising the base of West Main Street about two feet to better strengthen the new bridge.

As work continues for the next three weeks, the portion of Campus Drive under the bridge will remain closed to allow for quicker and more efficient construction. The section will open for vehicles and pedestrians beginning Aug. 19, in time for first-year student move-in.

Williams noted that work is still on track to be completed in October. For continued updates on the project, visit our Duke Today page on the construction.
