Foodies from across the Duke community are invited to gather this month to celebrate all things agricultural at unique green spaces on campus and beyond.

Duke's first "Tour de Food" is Saturday, April 20, and offers students, faculty and staff the chance to tour the Duke Community Garden at the Home Depot Smart Home, Charlotte Brody Discovery Garden at Sarah P. Duke Gardens and the Duke Campus Farm. In open house-style fashion, volunteers at each location will talk about highlights of each garden and farm space and offer snacks from produce grown on-site.

"People may not be aware of how different each of these food spaces can be and their place in our community, so it's a chance to show the work we all put in and the purposes of each space," said Emily Sloss, manager of Duke Campus Farm. "It's an easy way to highlight our efforts for Earth Month."

Tours for the Tour de Food begin at 2 p.m. Transportation will be provided at each location for those not driving. Online registration is encouraged for Duke community members planning to join the tour. Here's a schedule of events:

  • 2 to 2:45 p.m.: Snacks and tour of the Duke Community Garden at the Home Depot Smart Home on Faber Street.
  • 3 to 3:50 p.m.: Open house at the Charlotte Brody Discovery Garden at Sarah P. Duke Gardens.
  • 4 to 7 p.m.:  Tours of the Duke Campus Farm. Snacks, games and music provided by Farmhand, Duke's graduate student agricultural group.

Students, faculty and staff can get involved with agricultural spaces at Duke through volunteer opportunities at the Duke Campus Farm and Community Garden.

Duke community members can request space at the Community Garden to plant and grow fruits, vegetables and herbs for themselves and fellow volunteers. The beds run about 20-square feet and are shared among three or four people. To participate, Duke community members must volunteer at the garden at least once every two weeks by helping to care for produce and helping provide general upkeep of the space. Contact Emily McGinty at emily.mcginty@duke.edu to participate.

At the Duke Campus Farm, students and employees can stop by for weekly workdays that take place from 1 to 4 p.m. each Sunday at the farm, which is located on Friends School Road in Durham. For more information, email Emily Sloss at emily.sloss@duke.edu.
