Fire Reported at Levine Science Research Center

Fire that started in a small room is extinguished; no injuries reported

Access to the Levine Science Research Center is restricted Tuesday evening after a fire in Wing A of the building.

No injuries were reported after the 6:28 p.m. fire, which appears to have started in a small room on the third floor, said Wayne Thomann, director for Occupational and Environmental Safety Office at Duke.

"The heat built up and activated the sprinkler system and, like it's supposed to do, the sprinkler immediately extinguished the fire," he said.

Thomann said authorities are investigating whether the fire started in a piece of research equipment. Crews from Facilities Management are now assessing water and other damage.
