As Duke community members track steps and exercise minutes during the Get Moving Challenge, they'll have one more optional goal in April.

To coincide with the conclusion of Duke's team-based fitness challenge, LIVE FOR LIFE, Duke's employee wellness program, will bring together faculty and staff from across Duke to participate in the Great Human Race, an annual event to benefit the Volunteer Center of Durham.

All employees are invited to sign up for the 5K race and join the Duke team regardless of whether they're participating in the Get Moving Challenge. The race is at 8:30 a.m. April 6. It starts at Northgate Mall and winds through the Watts Hospital-Hillandale neighborhoods.

Duke runners will meet near the starting line by Sears Automotive at Northgate Mall by 8:15 a.m. April 6. A LIVE FOR LIFE staff member will show a sign to bring employees together. All Duke-affiliated participants are encouraged to wear Duke blue clothing.

"With about 2,300 Duke faculty and staff taking part in our Get Moving Challenge, we thought bringing our participants together for a concluding event would be a fun way to celebrate their hard work," said Julie Joyner, manager of LIVE FOR LIFE. "We hope that even employees who aren't competing in Get Moving decide to join us and show Durham our Duke camaraderie."

The race offers a competition for runners as well as a non-competitive atmosphere for casual walkers. Non-competitive walkers can register for free. Here's registration information:

  • Through March 6 - $30 per runner
  • March 7 to April 6 - $35 per runner
  • Family Runner Plan (through March 6) - $50 for two family members, each additional member $20

Full registration information can be found on the race's website.
