Former Under Secretary Michele Flournoy to Speak at Duke

Michele Flournoy will discuss "American Grand Strategy in a Time of Fiscal Constraint" with Duke Professor Peter Feaver

Michele Flournoy, the former under secretary of defense for policy, will speak at the Duke University's Sanford School of Public Policy at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27.

Flournoy will discuss "American Grand Strategy in a Time of Fiscal Constraint" with Duke professor Peter Feaver. She is a visiting fellow of the Von Der Heyden Fellows Program and will meet with various student and faculty groups on the Duke campus.

The event, in Sanford's Fleishman Commons, is free and open to the public. Parking will be available in the Science Drive visitor lot. Additional information can be found at www.sites.duke.edu/agsp.

A reception will precede the talk at 5:30 p.m. in the Sanford lobby.

Part of President Obama's transition team, Flournoy was influential from the start of the Obama administration in shaping defense policy toward emerging threats and formulating counterinsurgency strategy in Afghanistan. As Under Secretary, Flournoy was at the center of some of the administration's most challenging foreign policy issues, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the intervention in Libya, and the U.S. response to the Arab Spring.

Feaver, a professor of political science and public policy, is the director of the Triangle Institute for Security Studies and director of the Duke Program on American Grand Strategy. From 2005 to 2007, he was special adviser for strategic planning and institutional reform on the National Security Council staff at the Bush White House.

The Von Der Heyden Fellows Program Endowed lecture is presented by the Duke Program in American Grand Strategy, with support from the Triangle Institute for Security Studies, the Sanford School of Public Policy and the Duke International Relations Association.
