Children's Defense Fund Founder to Speak at Duke June 22

Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund, will speak at Duke University on Friday, June 22, as part of a three-day international conference focused on using service-learning in K-12 and college classrooms.The third annual International Center for Service-Learning in Teacher Education Conference June 21-23 at Duke also will feature workshops, panels and roundtables offered by practitioners and scholars from around the world. They will discuss their research, teaching and outreach that integrates service-learning with academic study to enrich learning, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities.Edelman will speak from 1:30-2:45 p.m. in Griffith Theater, located in the Bryan Center. Parking is available in the adjacent parking deck and visitor's lot.Edelman's talk is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Tickets can be picked up from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. at the University Box Office. For a service fee, tickets can also be ordered by phone at (919) 684-4444 or online.The Children's Defense Fund is a nonprofit child advocacy organization Edelman founded in 1973 to help lift children out of poverty, protect them from abuse and neglect and ensure their access to health care, quality education and a moral and spiritual foundation. Edelman has received more than 100 honorary degrees and many awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award, and the Robert F.
