Traffic Advisory: Construction Materials Delivery Saturday And Monday (Updated)

Expect traffic delays during large boiler and crane delivery on Coal Pile Drive

Update (1:42 p.m., April 3): Due to delivery delays, the boiler is estimated to arrive on campus between 4 and 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 3. Motorists should allow for extra time to travel around campus.

Motorists traveling along the north part of West Campus should expect delays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday, March 31 and Monday, April 2, as Facilities Management delivers a 550-ton crane and 80,000-pound steam boiler to the West Campus Steam Plant. The delivery is part of Duke's renovations of the historic plant.

Starting at about 7 a.m. Saturday, large trucks with pieces of the 30-feet tall crane will slowly travel from Morreene Road to Erwin Road, before turning onto Research Drive and parking on Coal Pile Drive. Following the delivery of the crane, the boiler will be brought on campus to the steam plant. Road crew members will be stationed along the route to support safe movement of the delivery truck and general traffic.

Facilities will work to place the new boiler into the steam plant beginning 7 a.m. Monday. After placing the boiler in the building, the crane will be broken down and taken off campus.
