Kevin Sowers, Duke University Hospital president, speaks
during an open house for Duke community members of the new Duke Cancer Center
Tuesday night.

The open house was one of several public events this week as
the Cancer Center prepares to accept its first patients on Feb. 27.  A scientific symposium and a lecture from Dr.
Charles Sawyers of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center were scheduled
for Wednesday.

At the open house, Dr. Victor J. Dzau, president and CEO of
Duke Health System, discussed how the new building was a physical manifestation
of the core values of Duke Medicine.
"The facility was designed with the patients and care teams in
mind," he said.

Pictured below, Dr. Michael Kastan, center, director of the
Duke Cancer Institute, talks with Matthew Kan, left, fourth-year Duke
University School of Medicine student, and Kan's parents, Grace and John Kan,
at the open house. As part of the festivities, Kan gave a violin performance in
the atrium of the new building.
