A new public radio series, "Groundwork," will
examine such controversial national issues as gay marriage, immigration and gas
drilling, from a local, community-based perspective.

The series, which will begin airing this spring on stations
around the country, is produced by the Center for Documentary Studies (CDS) and
supported by a grant from the MacArthur Foundation.

John Biewen, longtime public radio journalist-producer and
CDS audio program director, talks about the concept of "Groundwork"
and why radio is so effective as a documentary format.
