Traffic Advisory: Long-Term Construction Along Erwin Road
Beginning this month, motorists traveling along Erwin Road may experience delays due to road projects.
Due to the construction of the Duke Medicine Pavilion and Cancer Center, upgrades will be made to roads adjacent to Duke. Work is scheduled to begin the week of Oct. 9 and will continue with multiple projects until May 2012.
During the day, crews will work between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a single closed lane. Work performed on Erwin Road will occur at night between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Most work will take place Monday to Friday with occasional weekend construction.
The first portion of the construction project will occur between October and January 2012 with adding an additional northbound left-turn lane to Trent Drive at Erwin Road.

Starting November 2011
- Durham VA Medical Center driveway at Erwin Road - Crews will restripe the southbound lane to provide an exclusive left-turn lane and a shared through/right-turn lane.
- LaSalle Street at Erwin Road - Crews will construct an exclusive southbound right-turn lane along LaSalle Street.
- Erwin Road at Fulton Street - Work will provide an additional exclusive eastbound left-turn lane.
- Duke Eye Center driveway at Erwin Road - The project will add a new traffic signal to the intersection and reconstruct the northbound lane for an exclusive left-turn and a shared through/right-turn lane.
Starting December 2011
- Fulton Street at Elba Street - Crews will construct an exclusive northbound right-turn lane along Fulton Street.
- Research Drive at Erwin Road - Crews plan to restripe the existing northbound lane to provide an exclusive left-turn lane, a shared through/left-turn lane and an exclusive right-turn lane.
Starting February 2012
- Elba Street and Erwin Road - Work will cover railroad tracks that run across both roads.
