Who Would You Recognize at Duke?

It's been almost a year since Tim Walsh, vice president for finance, nominated the DART Analysis Team he led for Duke's Teamwork Award.

"I wanted to recognize how well this group of people from different schools and departments worked together, and the impact that their collaborative efforts had on how Duke as a whole managed its way through the budget issues caused by the recession," Walsh said.

The nine-member team, which won the award, is still basking in the recognition: they've been circulating the plaque they received from Duke President Richard Brodhead during the Blue Ribbon Award recognition luncheon last November. Each member keeps it in his or her office for a month or so, then signs the back and sends it on to the next team member. Eventually, they say, it will end up back with Walsh.

"There are many ways to measure the value of our contributions, but this kind of recognition from the university is particularly special," said team member Leigh Goller, director of internal auditing at Duke.

Do you know of a group that deserves public acknowledgement for their teamwork? Or an individual who demonstrates in his or her work the value of diversity?

Duke is accepting nominations for the 2011 Teamwork Award and the 2011 Diversity Award until Sept. 9.

"The Teamwork Award and Diversity Award recognize people who exemplify the values we prize in our institution," said Kyle Cavanaugh, vice president for administration. "Their contributions are often visible only to the people they work closely with. These awards give them the wider recognition they deserve."

Each year, two teams and two individuals are chosen as winners. Even if nominated faculty or staff don't win a Teamwork or a Diversity award, they still receive a presentation-quality binder with the nominations and letters of recommendations.

"Nominating an individual or a group reinforces how much you value their work and commitment to the institution," Cavanaugh said.

Nominations for the Teamwork Award should focus on departmental or cross-unit teams who foster cooperation, collaboration and open communication while working on a project that advances departmental goals and/or the mission of Duke.

Nominations for the Diversity Award should recognize a full-time faculty or staff member who demonstrates a commitment to the spirit of diversity and inclusiveness at Duke and provides leadership in these areas at the unit, departmental or institutional level.
