Egypt Travel Restrictions Lifted

Duke committee to continue monitoring situation

With the political situation in Egypt stabilizing, the Duke International Travel Oversight Committee voted Tuesday to remove all university travel restrictions to the country, effective immediately.

Duke will continue to monitor the situation in Egypt and strongly recommends the following steps for any Duke traveler planning to visit the country:

* Register your travel, noting all emergency contacts and any telephone numbers that you can be reached at within Egypt (increasing the likelihood that Duke/ISOS can contact you or your family/friends/colleagues in the event of an emergency)

* Familiarize yourself with the information on the International SOS website prior to travel

* Print and carry a hard-copy of the Duke-International SOS membership card

* Create a crisis management plan (for assistance in creating a country-, activity- or individual-specific management plan, please contact corprisk@duke.edu)

Occasional protests continue in the country, and a curfew is in place from midnight to 6 a.m. The Travel committee voted to restrict student travel on Feb. 1 amid widespread demonstrations that led to the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak.

DukeEngage is currently in the process of determining whether its eight-week service based program in Cairo, where much of the national unrest has occurred, will take place this summer.

"We continue to monitor the region closely as the situation there is still unpredictable DukeEngage Executive Director Eric Mlyn said. "Ultimately, we need to conclude whether our program is still viable given changes on the ground." DukeEngage will make its final decision no later than April 4.

Travel restrictions for neighboring Libya remain in place.
