U.S. Assistant Surgeon General to Speak Jan. 9 About Influenza Preparedness, Response

The speech is part of a three-day student forum that will explore the complex implications and challenges of confronting a pandemic spreading across the world.

U.S. Assistant Surgeon General Anne Schuchat will deliver the keynote address at a Duke University forum Jan. 9 that focuses on pandemic outbreaks.

Dr. Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, will discuss the challenges of surveillance and containment of influenza epidemics and the lessons learned from past outbreaks, including H1N1, Avian Flu and SARS. This topic is timely, as North Carolina is experiencing a widespread outbreak -- and one death -- this flu season.

The speech, which begins at 5:45 p.m. in Geneen Auditorium at Duke's Fuqua School of Business, is free and open to the public. It is hosted by the Duke Global Health Institute and Office of Undergraduate Education.

Parking is available in the Science Drive lot. It also can be viewed via a live stream on the web at http://www.ustream.tv/DukeUniversity#events.

The Winter Forum: Pandemic 2011 will take place Jan 9-11. Participants include more than 100 Duke undergraduates. It will explore the complex implications and challenges of confronting a pandemic spreading across the world.
