Durham Fire responds; fire contained to single lab

Durham Fire responded to Tuesday's fire.

Medical Science Research Building was briefly evacuated Tuesday afternoon following a small fire in a second story laboratory. The fire was contained within the single lab, and nobody was injured, Durham fire officials said.

Durham fire fighters responded to the alarm to the alarm at 2:52 p.m. Capt. Brian Eaton of Durham Fire said the building's sprinkler system contained the fire to the lab, and the firefighters extinguished the remnants of the fire. The firefighters left an hour later; most employees were able to return to their offices shortly after the alarm.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Duke maintenance workers were cleaning up water damage in the building. There was no estimate of the extent of the damage to the laboratory.
