Duke Marine Lab Weathers Second Winter Storm

Snow covered the bridge from Morehead City to Piver’s Island, where the Duke Marine Lab is located. Morehead City received seven inches of snow on Saturday, but the wind created snow drifts of more than 12 inches in places.

North Carolina's coast is known for its white sand beaches, but this weekend, the white beaches were the result of a winter storm that dropped about seven inches of snow on coastal communities.

Staff at the Duke University Marine Laboratory located on Piver's Island in Beaufort, N.C. worked during the weekend to ensure the safety of students during its second winter storm this season.

"Thanks to our dedicated staff for staying on the island overnight during the storm and working to keep our residents safe and roads and sidewalks cleared, and to the Dining Hall crew for always being ready with back-up plans to ensure meals are available whatever the weather," said Cindy Van Dover, director for the Duke University Marine Laboratory.
