In 2008, Antepli became Duke's first Muslim chaplain, and among the first at any American university. He is one of the few Muslims to have delivered an opening prayer for the U.S. House of Representatives. This summer, he was part of a delegation of American Muslim leaders to tour Holocaust sites including Dachau and Auschwitz. At Duke, Antepli provides pastoral care, teaches about Islam and participates in interfaith discussions. He is a faculty member in the Divinity School and at the Duke Islamic Studies Center, and also serves on the Duke Chapel Faith Council and Religious Life staff. On the morning of Sept. 10, he will lead students in observance of Eid Al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan.Office hours at a university are times when professors leave their doors open for individuals to stop by and discuss issues such as current events and developments in their fields. Duke's "Office Hours" series aims to bring the expansiveness and sparkle of these conversations to anyone with an Internet connection and an interest in the ideas bubbling up at Duke. To date, topics have ranged from patenting genes to political cartoons, Christian environmentalism and the legacy of Michael Jackson. You are invited to join the conversation.
