State Department Honors Duke Students

Three to study foreign languages abroad

Three Duke University students, Allyson Gunsallus, Matthew Roy and John Stokes, have been awarded a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to study critical needs languages during the summer of 2010.

These students are among the 575 U.S. undergraduate and graduate students, of the 5,300 applicants, awarded by the U.S. Department of the State's CLS Program in 2010.

The chosen students spend seven to 10 weeks in intensive language institutes during their internships. Gunsallus and Roy will travel to Russia studying Russian, while Stokes will be in India studying Urdu.

They will support their language acquisition through cultural immersion activities and are expected to continue their language study and implement them into their future professional careers.

The CLS Program aims to promote mutual understanding and respect between the U.S. citizens and people of other countries.
