Duke in Pictures: Edible Book Festival

Cakes, squid and Heath and Cliff bars

Melissa Harrell, Anne Marie Boyd, Rachel Ingold, Mary Yordy and Janie Morris consider bids on the tasty entries in the Duke University Libraries Preservation Department's annual Edible Book Festival in the Gothic Reading Room Thursday.

The event raised pledges totalling $353 for the Library Memorial Fund. Since 1999, staff and students have created books or book-themed treats out of edible materials. The food items ranged from cakes to chewed Heath and Cliff bars for an entry called "Wuthering Bites."

Most Edible: "All Creatures Great and Small" by Beth Doyle

Least Edible: "Damp Squid" by Beth Doyle

Punniest: "Jack and the Beans Talk" by Meg Brown

Most Book-like: (Tie) "Scallion Books" by Rachel Ingold and "Scarlet Pumpernickel" by Erin Hammeke

Best Student Entry: (Tie) "Mistletoe and the Three Kittens" by Eddie Brown (Age 3)) and "The Three Golden Keys" by Liam Brown (Age 6)

Overall Favorite: "In Defense of Food" by Amy Turner

Most Votes Across All Categories: "Damp Squid" by Beth Doyle.
