Conference Examines Sport and Apartheid in South Africa

"More Than Just a Game" will be screened Friday, Feb. 26.

A two-day workshop Feb. 26-27 will focus on the significance of sport for South Africans before and after the end of apartheid. The 2010 World Cup will take place in South Africa from June 11 to July 11.

The events are free and open to the public.

The film "More Than Just a Game: Apartheid v. Football" will be shown Friday, Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. in Room 240 at the John Hope Franklin Center. The film follows the stories of political prisoners at South Africa's infamous apartheid-era prison, Robben Island, who created a robust football league that became a unifying symbol of their resistance against apartheid. Co-producer Charles Korr will introduce the film and take questions after the film screening.

On Saturday, Feb. 27 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the workshop "From Apartheid to 2010 FIFA World Cup -- South Africa's Re-entry into World Sport," will take place in the Rhodes Conference Room at the Sanford School of Public Policy. Speakers include Grant Farred of Cornell University and Jesse Shipley of Haverford College.

The events are co-sponsored by Duke University's Concilium on Southern Africa, the Office of the Vice Provost of International Affairs, the Duke Center for International Studies and the Soccer Politics Series. For additional information visit: jhfc.duke.edu/cosa.
