Three Receive Faculty Scholars Honors

Award is highest student honor presented by faculty

Three Duke undergraduates who have compiled an exception record of undergraduate research and scholarship have received the Faculty Scholar's award, the highest award given to students by the faculty.

The students were selected out of 22 nominations from faculty in 16 departments. In addition, two students received honorable mention.

Benjamin Ward, chair of the Faculty Scholars Committee announced the winners and their faculty mentors Thursday at the Academic Council meeting.

The winners and their majors and mentors are:

Rose Li (Chemistry -- Mary Nijhout and Anne Motten)

Kathryn Maxson (Biology -- Alex Rosenberg and Alex Roland)

Matthew Rognlie (Mathematics & Economics -- George Tauchen, Vince Conitzer and David Kraines)

Honorable mention went to John Harpham (Political Science, mentored by Michael Gillespie) and Jordan Rice (Spanish & Latin American Studies, mentored by Judith Ruderman and Richard Rosa).

The award criteria include an exceptional grade point average, a record of independent work, the potential for innovative scholarship and an intention to pursue academic research as a career.

"This is one faculty committee that I would pay to be on," Ward said. "These are truly exceptional students."
