Duke in Top Ten of Latest U.S. News Rankings

The magazine singled out Duke in five of eight categories of "programs to look for," which it called "outstanding examples of academic programs that are commonly linked to student success."

Duke University placed 10th in the latest annual ranking from U.S. News & World Report magazine of national universities that offer doctoral degrees.

It ranked eighth among national universities in the magazine's survey of experts asked to identify "schools where the faculty has an unusual commitment to undergraduate teaching."

U.S. News also singled out Duke in five of eight categories of "programs to look for," which it called "outstanding examples of academic programs that are commonly linked to student success." Duke was cited in the categories for first-year experience, study abroad, service learning, writing in the disciplines and undergraduate research/creative projects. The final category, which recognizes opportunities for students to pursue "intensive and self-directed research or creative work," adds to the four other categories for which Duke was also recognized last year.

In addition, Duke was ranked ninth in a category called "great schools, great prices," for which the magazine compares a school's academic quality with the net cost of attendance for a student who receives the average level of need-based financial aid. "The higher the quality of the program and the lower the cost, the better the deal," the magazine said.

Duke's biomedical/biomedical engineering programs placed second in the rankings, and its undergraduate engineering program tied at No. 26 among doctoral universities.

"We're pleased to see Duke's faculty and students recognized once again for their excellence, and for the university to be noted for its deep commitment to undergraduate teaching," said Provost Peter Lange, the university's top academic official. "Duke continues to be seen as a leader in providing students with opportunities to pursue original research and intensive projects, and for the value of our educational experience."
