Duke Legal Nurse Consultant Program Launched

The Duke Office of Continuing Studies has launched a Legal Nurse Consultant Program (LNC), a nine-week certificate program designed to give licensed and experienced registered nurses the legal knowledge and skills necessary to consult on medical-legal issues.

LNCs combine nursing expertise with legal knowledge to advise attorneys and others on matters involving medical malpractice, personal injury, product liability, workers' compensation, healthcare licensure investigations and other healthcare-related cases. While some LNCs start their own practices, others prefer to retain full-time employment as RNs and do part-time consulting work.

Taught by licensed RNs who have all worked as legal nurse consultants, the program is comprised of six modules. Since this program is designed to train nurses to work as consultants, the final module covers relevant topics such as marketing, networking and developing a business plan.

The program was planned in conjunction with the Eastern North Carolina Chapter of the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants.

For more information or to register, contact Jennifer Thiessen at 681-1025 or Dee Holland at 688-1836, or visit the LNC website.

All RNs employed by Duke receive a $200 discount on the program. The first session begins on May 19.
