Duke in Pictures: Planting Trees on Arbor Day

Glenn Slaton with Durham Urban Forestry gives information to people picking up tree saplings Tuesday at an Arbor Day ceremony near Duke's East Campus Gazebo. About 250 free tree saplings were given away during the ceremony to Duke employees and members of the Durham community.

The saplings included cherrybark oaks, overcup oaks, black walnuts, cypress and American plum trees.

As part of the ceremony, the National Arbor Day Foundation honored both Duke and Durham for its commitment to preserving trees as part of its urban landscape. More than two dozen new trees were planted at various sites on campus.

Durham Mayor William V. "Bill" Bell and Duke officials spoke about the value of trees in an urban landscape and the need to preserve them.
