Duke University Development Moves to Downtown Durham

Move will bring different units together in one location

Duke's Office of University Development, which coordinates university-wide fund-raising activities, is moving to 614 W. Main Street effective March 30. This long-planned move will unify staff presently based in 2127 Campus Drive, 2117 Campus Drive, 700 W. Main Street and the American Tobacco Campus.

"Duke's central development office works with fund-raisers and university leaders throughout the campus," said Ellen Medearis, associate vice president of university development, "so we will all be visiting campus often. But when our move is complete, it will be the first time University Development staff members have been housed together since the early 1980s."

The Office of University Development has been based at 2127 Campus Drive since 1961, but various offices within the unit have relocated over the years to accommodate growth.

Staff based in 2127 Campus Drive, 2117 Campus Drive and 700 W. Main Street are all scheduled to move to the new W. Main Street address in Durham's West Village effective March 30. In May, Alumni and Development Records, which processes all charitable contributions to Duke University and the Duke University Medical Center, is scheduled to move from the American Tobacco Campus to join the rest of University Development.

During the 2007-08 fiscal year, 102,088 donors contributed a total of $385.7 million to Duke, supporting people and programs throughout the university. "During these difficult economic times, when philanthropy may decrease for awhile at Duke and other universities, fund-raising and relationship-building continue to be vital to our future," said Bob Shepard, vice president for alumni affairs and development.

"Student callers can rest assured that the Duke Annual Fund's telethon will continue to operate out of 2127 Campus Drive," said Hank Woods, assistant vice president of the Duke Annual Fund. When planning for the move began in 2007, Woods asked to keep the telethon room on campus because of the convenient location for student callers.

The campus box number for charitable gifts will not change, before or after the move: Alumni and Development Records, Duke University, Box 90581, Durham, NC 27708.

Similarly, the mailing address for other University Development offices remains the same: University Development, Duke University, Box 90600, Durham, NC 27708.
